Allen University Student Organizations Honor Peers & Celebrates UNCF Decades of Delivering A Dream?
Allen University student organizations honor UNCF scholarship recipients and peers through artistic expression/spoken word, formal presentations and a fashion show. The event will acknowledge the founding of United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and honor its exceptional message: “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”. During the event, students will tweet and employ other social media strategies to bring awareness and messaging to protest the impending legislative cuts affecting appropriations that benefit HBCU student scholarships and other HBCU budgets across the country. The student-driven presentations will incorporate a viewing of the UNCF An Evening of Stars Presented by Target. The celebration is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the John H. Adams Gymnatorium on Allen University’s campus.
Alumni and friends of the College have offered to lend their support by simultaneously viewing the UNCF An Evening of Stars Presented by Target on Saturday, January 28th and January 29th and on BET Networks at 11 p.m. EST/PST and 10 p.m. CST on Sunday, January 29th .The show will re-air on these days to reflect the nearly 70 years of impact and support that UNCF continues to provide to deserving students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). Allen University is pleased to honor UNCF and its many decades of success. Allenites have received over one million dollars in scholarship funds since becoming a UNCF member institution in 2005. UNCF funds have helped to deliver the dream of countless students who would otherwise have been unable to pay for College, says Nicole Osborne, Associate Vice President for Marketing & Development; while availability of an education today is more accessible than ever, the cost to attend a higher education institution still remains a factor for many. It only makes sense to invest in the UNCF/ Allen University Annual Fund in support of the education of well-deserving minority scholars, says Osborne.
Allen University will host its 7th Annual Richard Allen/ UNCF Gala on March 30, 2012. The Gala, a fundraiser for Allen University and UNCF, will conclude a week of inaugural festivities in support of Allen University’s official inauguration of President Pamela Wilson; scheduled to take place from March 25-30, 2012.
