Sixth Annual Richard Allen Awards Gala

Allen University will hold its Sixth Annual Richard Allen Awards Gala on Friday, March 25, 2011 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center located at 1101 Lincoln Street, Columbia, South Carolina.? The annual event will begin with a silent auction and reception at 6:00 pm to be followed by dinner and awards presentations at 7:00 pm.? Immediately following the program, guests will be entertained by the legendary S.O.S. Band. The groups hit songs include ?Take Your Time (Do It Right)? (1980), ?Just Be Good to Me? (1983), and ?The Finest? (1986).

This black-tie gala serves as an annual fundraiser to provide scholarships for deserving students through the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).? Additionally, the event honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to society and celebrates the founding of Allen University 141 years ago.

The 2011 recipients of the Richard Allen Award include: Traci Young Cooper, Ed.D., Director of Extended Day Programs for Richland School District One, Columbia, South Carolina; Judith Davis, Esquire, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer for BlueCross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina; Bambi Gaddist, Ph.D., Executive Director of South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council, Columbia, South Carolina; Leon Lott, Sheriff of Richland County, Columbia, South Carolina; Lessie Price, Manager of Government Affairs for URS Corporation, Aiken, South Carolina; Martha Scott Smith, Director of Public Affairs-SE Citizenship and Sustainability for AT&T, Columbia, South Carolina; Marvin Stevenson,?Member of South Carolina?s Probation, Pardon, and Parole Board, Marion, South Carolina; and Constance and Evester Sullivan, Allen University alumni (retired educator and retired chemist, respectively), Washington, D.C.

Individual tickets are $125 and sponsorship opportunities are available.? All proceeds from the Gala support the 39 UNCF member colleges and universities, including the five institutions located in the state of South Carolina ? Allen University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College, and Voorhees College ? and the thousands of students they serve.? Founded in 1870, Allen University is the first institution of higher education in South Carolina founded by African-Americans for the express purpose of educating African-Americans.
