Allen University Student Affairs

Allen University is committed to facilitating the total growth and development of its students through the provision of quality services and programs that complement and enhance curricular offerings.  The Vice President of Student Affairs is responsible for developing policies and procedures for the enhancement of student life.  While services in this area are non-academic, they are an integral part of the University’s total program and provide support for the academic areas and other programs of the institution.

THE ALLEN UNIVERSITY PROMISE

As a member of the Allen University Community:

  • I promise to respect the Christian environment at Allen University.
  • I promise to respect the Allen University community, its property, and myself.
  • I promise to demonstrate a sense of responsibility.
  • I promise to promote order and safety on Allen University’s campus.
  • I promise to exercise academic integrity by supporting the Allen University legacy.

Acceptance of this promise commits each student of the Allen University community to behavior that exemplifies respect and builds character.

RESIDENCE HALLS
Residential life is an integral part of the educational program at Allen University that fosters student learning, promotes active engagement and collaboration with others through mutual respect, appreciation for diversity, and opportunities to attain leadership and community living skills.   The Code of Conduct is strictly enforced to facilitate our goals.

Room reservations are made through the Office of Student Life.  Since rooms on campus are limited, students who apply first will receive reservations first.  However, priority for on-campus housing is given to freshman students.  Requests for roommates must be mutual.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE AGREEMENT
The University maintains residence halls to provide students with a wholesome environment in which to live and study.  The success of this enterprise rests largely upon the cooperative spirit of each resident.  It is expected that each student resident will abide by all rules and regulations and respect the rights and prerogatives of roommates and colleagues. *(More detailed information regarding residential living is found in the Residential Life Handbook).

FOOD SERVICES
Food services.  Meals are served daily, except on selected holidays and during official University breaks.

STUDENT SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES

HEALTH SERVICES
Allen University students are provided with health services through the Health Services Office, which is located in Reid Hall.  Office hours are 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Monday-Thursday.  Other times, students are to notify residence directors.  Referrals are made to physicians or health agencies; local hospitals provide services in cases of emergency or serious illness.

HEALTH INSURANCE
All students enrolled at Allen University are encouraged to participate in some type of insurance plan for their protection.  The institution currently provides insurance coverage for students who choose to utilize it.  Allen University cannot be held liable for injuries/illnesses that occur to students without health insurance coverage.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES OFFICE
The Student Activities staff creates opportunities that inspire students to become active members of the campus and community.  Working in collaboration with faculty, staff, and students, this office offers a variety of educational, cultural, social, and recreational programming that foster student learning and development.  Students are encouraged to assume leadership roles and explore their interests.

The Student Activities staff assists student organizations on campus in the planning and scheduling of events to ensure quality of residential life and promote the safety and welfare of participants.  The registration, chartering, and scheduling of events for all student organizations are performed through this office.

STUDENT CENTER
The Student Center, located on Pine Street, is a place where valuable lessons in citizenship, leadership, and social responsibility can be learned.  There, students have the opportunity to meet and greet other students.  The Center is an extension of the classroom through discussion, conversations, and seminars.  It provides an environment that is conducive to relaxation, socialization and the sharing of day-to-day experiences outside the classroom.

RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES
Traditionally, a wholesome approach to religious life is one of the basic objectives of Allen University.  Religious activities are organized to enhance the spiritual growth and development of the entire University family.  To this end, the following activities and services are offered:

• Cultural, Academic, and Religious Series (C.A.R.S.)
• Annual Religious Emphasis Week
• Student Christian Association

All students are required to attend the weekly C.A.R.S. program at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Faculty and staff are strongly urged to attend the weekly assemblies as scheduled.  Advisors are available to monitor C.A.R.S. attendance on a weekly basis.  In addition, all students are required to attend:

1. Fall Convocation
2. Founder’s Day -- February

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
The Student Government serves as the medium for expression of student opinions and assists college officials in the coordination of student activities.  It represents all students in planning, organizing, and directing major campus programs for the student body.  Upon enrollment, all full-time students automatically become members of the Student Government Association.

Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of co-curricular activities designed to enhance their sense of community responsibility and their capacity for leadership.  The Student Government Association provides an early experience in self-government that serves as a useful background for later public service.  Leaders of student government work to represent the student body as well as to develop pride in and loyalty to their alma mater.

Students are advised to choose activities wisely and balance academic activities with participation in service, spiritual, athletic, social, and recreational pursuits.  A 2.0 grade point average is required to participate in all activities, except where otherwise designated.

HONDA CAMPUS ALL-STAR CHALLENGE
An Opportunity for Leadership Development
Allen University competed in its first Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) national tournament in April 2002 in Orlando, FL.  More than 320 college students from 64 Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) across the country competed in the three-day tournament for more than $300,000 in institutional grants.  HCASC gives students the opportunity to exercise teamwork and to network and establish long-term relationships with other contestants.  The competitors showcase their skills and knowledge by quickly and accurately answering 10-point “toss-up” questions and 20-30 point bonus questions on world history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social sciences, popular culture, and African American history and culture.  Over the three-day period, the initial field of 64 teams is pared down to 16 teams, which then participates in a single-elimination playoff round until only the final four teams remain.  A division of College Bowl, Honda Campus All-Star Challenge was established by American Honda Motor Co. Inc. in 1989.  Since the inception of the program, more than 15,000 HBCU students have participated, and Honda has awarded nearly $3.5 million in grants to HBCU’s to improve campus life through facility improvements and increasing academic resources.
