Allen University is a private, four-
year liberal arts, coeducational, historically black college operated under the auspices of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, committed to providing students with higher education in a Christian atmosphere. |

History
Founded in Cokesbury, South Carolina in 1870 as Payne Institute, the institution moved to Columbia in 1880 and was re-named Allen University in honor of Richard Allen, founder of the AME Church. |
Academic Program
Majors in eight academic areas: biology, business administration, chemistry, elementary education, English, mathematics, music and social science. The University meets the individual needs of students through the Student Support Services Program, the Honors Program, and counseling and academic advisement. |
Mission
Allen University is an academic community which provides students an opportunity to obtain a baccalaureate degree in liberal arts and professional programs. The University has a strong unalterable commitment to teaching in delivery of its baccalaureate programs. |
Library & Learning Resource Center
The J.S. Flipper Library houses the book collection, curriculum and the media areas. Library holdings include print and non-print materials, African-American collections, AME materials and other University material of historical significance. |
Accreditation
Allen University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. |
Campus Life
Students may choose from more than 25 organizations and clubs, including sports teams, music groups, honor societies, professional societies, religious organizations, fraternities and sororities, school and departmental clubs, international student organizations, the University Choir and the Student Government Association. |
Affiliation
Allen is affiliated with a number of academic and professional accrediting agencies, including the AME Church General Board on Higher Education, the Association of Teacher Educators, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the South Carolina Higher Education Assessment Network. |
Athletics
Allen is a member of the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The athletic programs include basketball for male and female, track and field, golf, bowling, volleyball, creative dance and intramural sports. |
Campus
Allen is located in Columbia, South Carolina, near the central business district. Four of our major campus facilities are listed with the Historic Federal Registry (Arnett Hall, Chappelle Administration Building, Coppin Hall and J.S. Flipper Library). |
Admission
Allen welcomes applications from prospective freshmen, transfer students, and non-traditional students. Admission to the University is competitive. |
Enrollment
Approximately 600 students from the United States and four foreign countries attend the university. |
