Library

Erected in 1941, the Joseph Simeon Flipper Library strengthens and supports the University’s curriculum.

The library provides faculty, staff and students access to more than 50,000 volumes of books, journals, periodicals, materials and media equipment. It also shares several online resources and databases with other institutions:

  • Online Catalog – Books in J.S. Flipper Library
  • EBSCO-host web – Business Source Premier, Regional Business News, Medline, ERIC, MLA; offers bibliographic information on journal articles and on journals in the humanities.
  • SC Discus – (SC State Library sponsored site for K-12 and PASCAL sponsored for colleges)
    Includes: Custom Newspapers, Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center, Business Company Resource Center, Biography Resource Center and  Learning Express(check with library staff for off-campus access)
  • Pascal’s Online Patron Catalog – PASCAL is South Carolina’s virtual academic library. PASCAL enables students and faculty at South Carolina institutions of higher learning to request books via inter-library loan from participating academic libraries in the state.

Academic Computer Lab

The Academic Computer Lab is located on the first floor of the J. S. Flipper Library. Forty computers are available for use by current Allen University students. Printing services are also provided.

Rules and Regulations

  • ID (Identification Card) must be presented when checking out library materials. Do not allow anyone to use your ID.
  • Library materials, in general, circulate for two weeks unless otherwise noted.
  • Students must sign in to use the computers on the first and second floor of the library. These computer labs are for class assignments and research, not for non-academic purposes. Students who do not comply with library rules will be asked to leave.
  • Food and beverages are not allowed in the Library.
  • Smoking is prohibited.
  • Caps/hats, head-wraps, do-rags should be removed before entering the J. S. Flipper Library.
  • Students must check out materials at least twenty minutes before closing.
  • Students who violate these guidelines or are disrespectful to the library staff or others will be reported to the Office of Student Affairs.
