Pulling in the Horizon: Celebrating Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Public Reading by Nikky Finney and Kwame Dawes

March 26th 11:00 a.m. Pulling in the Horizon , “Looking for the Horizon In and Outside of Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God.”   Dr. Folashade Alao University of South Carolina Literary and African American Scholar, will explore how Hurston’s writing serves as a critical model for black women writers such as Alice Walker and Toni Morrison. Dr. Alao will focus on Hurston’s use of language, imagery, and themes, and how these themes offer a powerful new mode for constructing stories of black life, particularly black women’s lives. Janie Crawford, the protagonist of Their Eyes Were Watching God,  was a new kind of character. Yet what does it mean to read this text now? How do the models Hurston offers extend beyond the realm of writing? These are some of the questions that Dr. Alao explores as we search for Hurston’s horizon.
